The question of our purpose here would seem to vex many. We may take some solace in the knowledge that it is something of a universal dilemma. I'm afraid I could not say what your destiny is in your own world. I would suspect many men there spend a lifetime seeking it, if humans are anything like one another given different times and points of origin. The endeavor to understand this and many other of life's quandaries is the first and only basis of virtue, as Spinoza said. It is a virtue to wonder and to question, if nothing else.

You are a soldier in your native realm, are you not? What oath did you take on assuming that role? It may guide you to your immediate purpose, if not your more distant one.

About which part? Corrupt projects or how everything keeps coming back to keys.

I think about both.

[He tries to focus on the keys, and usually winds up back on the corrupt project. Pathetic attempt at humour.]

I'd ask which part worries you more, but I think I already know.

[There's a moment or two of silence as he thinks. He's fucked things up pretty recently by assuming people could and would handle emotional distress on their own. North is a world apart from the Blues, true, but it's still the same concept, right?]

You caught me. The giant keys are kind of freaky.

[It takes him a moment to answer. It's been proven that North isn't very good at talking about his own feelings, even though he insists on hearing everyone else out. And it's weird to have Wash offer. It's not really a gesture has come to expect, from the Wash he knows in the dream anyway.]
