Second Report - Necessity Is The...

[ The communicator clicks on, revealing the sunlit decore of Twilight Town. Sunset Hill, specifically, for those familiar with the location.

What should also be familiar is the statue in view of the camera. Not so familiar? The portal set at the base, the glow pulsing brightly. Invitingly, even. A pricklemane bounces towards it, then stops, tilting its head from left to right and waggling its ears in a show of interest. ]

This wasn't here when I passed by this morning. But it looks like the wait for something new to happen is over.

[ After 10 seconds or so of focus, the camera swings around until the firm frown of Lin Beifong is visible. ]

We don't know what might be through here, and securing a safe point on the other side is a priority. I plan on crossing over shortly. Anyone in Twilight Town is welcome to join me, but I recommend being ready for combat.

[ooc: this post is action/prose friendly! feel free to reply to Lin, or go ahead and do your own thing in a seperate thread. :D ]

We will simply have to be diligent in seeking out answers, whatever our mysterious keeper might have in mind.

Heh. I don't plan on that happening, and I'd like to think I've more control over metalbending than that. But I'm also concerned about any damage done purely to the internal systems. I have no problems taking down doors, but I do not know how these 'life support' systems work on the ship. [breaking something integral to that would be..bad.]

I have yet to hear back from anyone who may have found such doors. York and Tony weren't able to get much of anything from these systems [which were far beyond the wires and radios of her world] so if there's a means to do so, controlling it from here will not be possible.

We'll have to see, I suppose. I don't particularly wish to impose on them, but we may have no choice if we're going to get to the bottom of these matters.

[He grimaces at thinking of that.] And prepared to take that mysterious keeper out of commission if necessary.

[It likely would be bad...] I don't either. It's possible being in a dream realm may override any necessary life support, especially if other systems aren't working, but it's not a good chance to take.

I see. [He thinks for a little bit.] If there's nothing to open to the outside, I'd hope that maybe there's at least something to land the ship, but that seems even more unlikely.

I imagine the agents aren't happy to see this place here... [How would he feel if the Land of Departure showed up here?] But yes, maybe we can ask them to stay long enough to find the most important controls.

Do you believe it will come to that?

[Not that Lin is under any impression that they're here due to the sincere benevolence of their mystery 'benefactor', mind you. But Eraqus is the first she's heard voice such a grim thought since her arrival.]

[Lin suspected a ship acting as a 'world' was probably going to be one of the more unusual places they encountered.] Likely best to simply assume this is all we'll be seeing for the time being. It'd make no sense for us to leave it to find the next set of clues after the previous world's boundaries having been so specifically set.

The closer to the outer levels of the ship we are, the more I'll refrain from using anything other than my cables or gauntlets. [She never used either against the giant bee, but she hadn't seen much need to when earth worked well enough at the time.]

I hope so. We have airships, but none that reach beyond the skies. This level of technology is beyond me. [She's not afraid to admit that, even if it is somewhat irritating to her.]

I am hoping not, but I strongly suspect so. [He's got his reasons for coming to the grim conclusion.]

[While it is unusual, Eraqus wouldn't be too surprised if something even stranger popped up.] I suppose not. It would have been useful to see if we could break some boundaries to other worlds, but for a dream realm, that may not be possible.

That sounds reasonable.

The majority of worlds I've heard of don't have this kind of technology, so you're not alone on that front. [And the only reason he could get across space at all is because of personal transports.]

[Lin is silent for a moment, before green eyes narrow slightly. Not accusingly, however. Her voice cools a little.] You sound certain for someone lacking proof at hand. Is there something I should be aware of?

I'm afraid my lack of experience with dream worlds hinders me on that front. At least for now. [She's no Avatar, that's for sure. A very grounded earthbender, if you will.] But it certainly seems like the requirements for unlocking the boundaries between worlds shifts each time. Sora mentioned there was a delay this time?

[dryly] Hmmph. Well that makes me feel better.

[There's a long pause as he thinks this over...while he's tried to make an effort to be more open with Keybearer knowledge here, some things are still really hard to say.] Apparently Sora and some of his friends were in the dream realm very recently...and while here, suffered the machinations of another Keybearer; one that I know well. If they are behind this once again, it won't be for benevolent reasons.

I would say the majority of us don't have experience with dream worlds, even knowing they exist. [The idea that so many are ending up here is part of the problem.] Perhaps it is different this time...I wasn't there when this world was opened, I only heard that somehow the Keyhole was in pieces when it was first found.

[ Lin, oblivious to the hardships behind the highlights reel, can nonetheless tell there's more to the story than he's said. When matters prove as bitterly, intensely personal in all the wrong ways, such hardship is understandable. But what he has told her is enough, for now. ]

I'm sorry to hear that. [And she means that most sincerely.] I hope that these aren't related incidents, but I've seen machinations enough in Republic City to know that those pulling the strings from the dark are the dangerous ones.

Sora told me that the keyhole in Twilight Town did not appear until after the Mansion had been visited. I'd presume our defeating the Buzzerfly Queen played a part as well. However, it took three people to be present before it appeared properly.

[A pause, then, thoughtfully] One of those three was Washington.

[He's thankful that she's not digging too deep into it for now, because it is still painful. He'll probably say more if needed, but only if really needed, because he'd rather not go into his own failings with Xehanort and his students.]

I truly hope so, too. But with what I've learned, and knowing his wants, it wouldn't surprise me at all if he was behind this again.

That is different from the first Keyhole that appeared...although defeating a large Nightmare does seem to be a part of it.

[That's something he hadn't thought of.] Do you think perhaps a different world might have opened up if someone different had shown up by the Keyhole?

I'll keep that in mind. Is there a name to go with this unwanted individual?

[There would no doubt be time later. Memory might dull some of the pain associated there, though what benefit such a thing might have could be considered debatable.

But now was not that time.]

It's as good a theory as any at this point. Given the number of people from your Worlds are present, it would make sense that a second place linked to you and yours would open.

It's possible Washington being there when the next one opened had influence. However, whether that holds true for future worlds will not be obvious until we discover whatever it is that this one wants. And it's no guarantee that we'd be successful in influencing where the next portal goes.

[There's a whole lot of bitterness in his reply.] Xehanort.

[Yes, there were other things to tend to right now.]

Perhaps, and I guess that we can work off of it until a better theory presents itself.

And it seems to change and become more difficult every time. [He thinks for a bit.] Since all the worlds appearing here are supposedly asleep, too...it may be for the best if we have no influence over which ones appear next.

Xehanort.

[ Repeated, sans the bitterness; as though tasting the name, and still finding it wanting. There are few things that can earn that sort of reaction and she doesn't miss how his expression changes with the word, though Lin's own gaze remaining level. ]

I'll remember that.

[ Later, she'll ask again. Later. ]

Ienzo is an intelligent young man. He may think of something we've overlooked in the equation. But until we have a more solid idea.. [There's a blink.] Why do you say that?

[He trusts that she will, although a large part of him wishes he could forget everything associated with Xehanort.]

I've already passed information I know on to him. I expect we'll get some compilation of that gathered information of him soon.

Because if any worlds show up here in this realm, it means they've fallen asleep, and everyone in them, too. I don't think most of us want to see our home worlds show up here, especially through our own influence.

[ Nice as that wishful sentiment was, forgetting would simply allow another avenue of victory. IF that man was involved here.. However painful they may be, to be forewarned is to be forearmed. ]

Most probably. And I doubt we'll be seeing this world go anywhere for a while. We've time to gather information. Hopefully, those dreams won't be necessary.

[ Hopefully. But Lin's not that hopeful. Her lips twist as she considers Eraqus' words, before her head shakes in disagreement. ]

Perhaps, but on the other hand, if it is a world we know, that's already an edge of sorts - those of us native to it will recognise any changes, or oddities that could be the result of whatever force is keeping us here. [The mansion and its wall spring to mind.] I'd prefer to stack the deck in our favour, rather than against it.

[That's about the best comfort he can get out of the whole situation, considering what he's heard about the future, which is why he's more willing to share now.]

I certainly hope so. [Both times they haven't been pleasant at all.]

I suppose so, as long as those advantages are enough for us to find this out in the end. [He has his reasons for being REALLY upset if the Land of Departure should show up here.]

[ If Republic City were to appear, Lin would likely be torn as well. On the one hand, her city, her beat. On the other, it was a far bigger, far more sprawling metropolis - and she wasn't particularly keen on the people here seeing it covered in Amon's propaganda.

She shook her head ruefully. ]

The portal's been open for less than a day. We can what-ifs until the hippo cows come home, but until--

[ And then her radio goes off. There's a flicker of surprise, before the communicator is lifted, allowing Tony's voice to filter through so both can hear him clearly.

>> Lin? Hey, we've got trouble ]

Stark?

What happened.

[He is remarkably good at what-ifing; perhaps to his detriment. And he's about to answer when the radio call comes in.]

What's going on?

[ It's a worried look shot in Eraqus' direction. It would seem something further was amiss here.

Neither have long to wait to find out: Tony spells it out clearly enough as to what happened. Lin bites back a curse, settling instead to ask:]

What's your location?

[ She's already moving towards the bridge doors, not pausing to look back to see if Eraqus plans to follow. Of course he will.

Giving Tony instructions is simple; the man seemed calm enough, even if he was angry (and understandably so). To Eraqus, she comments: ]

The nightmares here must be far stronger than in Twilight Town.

[a reflection of the Freelancers' nightmares about this place, perhaps?]

[Of course he's following along not far behind, because this sounds serious. Figures that this would happen on their very first exploration trip.]

Tch, already? That's not a good sign.

[If it is, then that's an even worse sign.]

Perhaps this is the wake up call we've been waiting for in regards to our situation.

[ Not that she's happy to hear Sora has been on the receiving end - then again, the boy had apparently been through this before. Or deeds far worse.

They would have to hope Xehanort was not the one responsible this time.]

[To Stark:] Understood. We'll see you shortly.

We'd best not waste time.

Very early, even for a wake up call. [But maybe this means they'll get to the bottom of things all the sooner.]

No, definitely not. [He doesn't need to say any more, they're off to find out what's happened.]
