Let the Hunt Begin

As I'm sure some of you are aware by now, a number of magical necklaces are on the loose - how many has not been mentioned, at least not that I'm aware of. Odds are that they're all in the new world - Equestria, I think it was called?

I don't know how many of you feel ready to face combat on four legs, but I'm asking those who are to help in searching for the baubles. A more detailed description would be quite helpful, if any of the natives are willing to oblige.

From personal experience, if a thing is worth hiding, it's also worth guarding, so that will be my first priority - finding places that have heavy Nightmare populations, and cleaning them out.

However, I'm not at all certain that they'll just be lying around; the note said something about looking within our hearts. Is there anyone who could shed some light on that, maybe translate it from Riddle-ese into something more closely resembling logic?

...perhaps some more information on the nature of the Elements is in order.

The six are Honesty, Loyalty, Generosity, Laughter, Kindness, and Magic, with Magic acting as a keystone, both summoned by and binding the other five together. They are born of feelings of friendship and unity betwixt ponies, and can only be used by those who are so bound together. One might say 'tis always necessary to look within one's heart to wield them.

Now, 'tis possible that Magic has once again been lost, but the other five have more stable physical forms and are quite nearly impossible to destroy. They, at least, are likely being guarded.

So we're looking for five, maybe six necklaces. Can you describe them in detail? It may seem like a prying question, but I've come across a lot of jewelry in odd places, and I'd rather be safe than sorry.

I'm sensing a definite theme to these Elements, so I have to ask - are they likely to attack someone with, say, my type of power if I try to pick one up?

Neigh, the Element of Magic is a crown. All are golden, and fitted with differently colored and shaped gems. The shapes...may be different at the moment, given that not all the Bearers are present, but when last I saw them, there was a ruby lightning bolt, a blue sapphire balloon, a pink sapphire butterfly, a topaz apple, and an amethyst diamond. Magic is fitted with several different gems, but the largest should be star-shaped.

I should think not. The Elements require bearers to be used - they have never acted on their own, even when falling into unfriendly claws.

Hmm. A crown and five golden necklaces with oddly shaped gemstones. Shouldn't be too hard to verify that we've found the right ones, then, especially if they're as magic-heavy as has been suggested.

That's reassuring; I'd hate to find one just to get knocked on my rear when I try to pick it up.

I'm purrobably not going to be good at the riddle, but I might know something about Heart.

Go ahead and tell us, if you think you know something. At this point, any information we get is potentially viable, even if it's completely off-center.

I don't know if it'll mean anything to you, but I was the Rogue of Heart when we were in Sgrub. I suppawse I still am too, since we nefur really finished the game. But um, Sgrub usually used heart to mean... what you are, although it cofurs emotions and feelings too.

[The cat puns. The cat puns.] If I'm guessing correctly, it's the jewelry that needs to understand you, not me or anyone else. This... Scrub? No, that's not it. I don't know how you pronounce it, but it sounds like an interesting place.

[The cat puns are not likely to stop either, so it's probably for best to simply get to tolerating them.]

Sgrub. And that's one way to put it, I guess.

[Ah well. It's certainly not the strangest thing he's ever encountered.]

Oh. That type of interesting?

Mmhmmm. Meowst of us made it through okay, but it wasn't really always fun.

[Honesty? Generosity? Laughter? Emile's not so sure he'd be any good at all in finding something like that. Too damn abstract for him. But fighting, now, that he can do.]

I can take cleanup duty if there's any spots full of Nightmares.

Pretty much the same thing I'm doing; the more the merrier, but from the sound of it we may need someone who can actually use these things, in the long run.

And how we supposed to do that?

[Well, Celestia probably knows. Maybe even Rarity. Emile probably shouldn't worry about it.]

Your guess is as good as mine. My talents lend themselves more to the stabbing and the incinerating than to high magic, though I do know a thing or two about alchemy.

I can get behind stabbin' things.

[But he'll just have to try harder to find these Elements of Harmony.]

Guess we better keep our eyes open, huh.

I can't help you with the riddle, but cleaning duty sounds fun.

It's certainly therapeutic. Though I'm beginning to wish I'd managed to bring a gun along instead of stuff that's more or less unusable in tight spaces.

...I have no problem help looking, but I sure don't want anything to do with...heart stuff.

Heart stuff...? [Oh, right. Demon.]

Well, most of us seem to be doing cleanup, so you can put a hand in there. If you want some help getting a hand on your power, let me know; maybe we can make some headway on working out the problems on both ends.

[...tsunny embarrassment here] Y-you know what I mean.

...Do you have anything in mind that could help with that?

A couple of ideas, at the moment. We'll need someplace open and away from people. And buildings. And anything else that might get caught in the crossfire.

...Someone on standby with a fire extinguisher might not be a bad idea.

What exactly are you planning?

There's really only one way to get better at control, and that's through practice. Sparring, in this case. I'll have to talk to someone about practice weapons, but that shouldn't be an issue; I can probably even make some myself, given a little time.

That does beg the question, though - what sort of weapon do you intend to use? The Death I know uses a scythe, but for someone your size we should probably start smaller - maybe a kama or kusarigama?

...That reminds me, I need to see about getting myself a smaller blade as well.

...I've got my own scythe, but it's probably not best to use it for that kind of practice. [One swipe and you'll be gone, most likely.]

Usually I handle things with this. [As spoken, he pulled up a winged little staff.]

Probably not, but I would like to see it if you're comfortable with showing it to me. [Kid, I've already fought a scythe-wielding Death. It wasn't what I'd call fun, but I survived. I've got my own protections.]

Hmm. A bit short, but it looks solid enough. Do you use it purely as a focus or are you willing to hit things with it?

It's a focus, but I can swing it. [...Just not usually, unless he panics again.]

...We should probably look into something a little more functional, for what I'm talking about.

[Wait, he thinks he knows where is this going.]

I don't exactly do well with...sword...hitty things.

[That totally was a professional way to put it, shush.]

There's only one way to fix that. You're going to have to work at it, and working alone won't get you very far. But that's not really the point here - the goal is to give you better control, both over your body and your power. And you're not the only one who's going to be working on that.

[You're gonna argue with that pitiful face, aren't you.]

But...

Nothing that's worth having can be had without working for it. Even if it's a legacy or a gift - you still have to work for it, even if it doesn't seem like work at the time.
