[Madeline has simply been gaping through this exchange. When Wash uses a horrible swear in front of her and what sounds like his fiancee, her hand goes up to cover her mouth. She isn't sure which part of this is worse: the swearing, the making fun of her, or the fact that this other woman is clearly unattended and getting up to all sorts of things with Wash when they aren't married.
What Madeline Bassett does know is that this is all too much. Wash has lied to her. He's made himself out to be such a nice, tender, and sad man. But here he is showing his true stripes. The young woman tears up properly.]
I trusted you, Mr. Washington! [The tears roll down her cheeks.] But you're not a gentleman at all! [She covers her face and cries the bitter tears of a fool. Oh, how her heart is torn by this! It feels as though jagged glass is cutting at her very soul for the betrayal. She simply can't speak to him ever again!
Down around her feet, Bertie takes note that his Person is very sad. He bounces, trying to get up high enough to lick her where the hurt is and make it stop.]
We have to find the fairies and make them send us back, Bertie. Oh, we must!
[Madeline cuts off the communication with another quiet sob before hurrying out of the room she found in the hotel and out into Traverse Town. She and Bertie will find the fairies on their own. They're the only friends they've got for each other. She can't trust anyone here!]
