Her duty is also to protect the princess, but mainly to serve as an adviser so that the Princess can learn what difficult decisions lie before her and the best choices to make. She also serves as a tutor to the Princess, teaching and guiding her in all that she must do.

I suppose one might also use the term advisor to describe her role.
